Events and Large Groups

Events and Large Group Tours are no longer available.

Large Group Events from 15 to 40 guests

Corporate meeting? Conference activity? Group outing?

Our large group beer tastings are designed for gatherings of between 15 and 40 adults. It is a bit impractical for large groups to walk from brewery to brewery so we have made special arrangements with a handful of breweries in the Ballard Brewing District that can accommodate groups of up to 40 people. This is a fun and educational activity for out-of-town groups, corporate team building, and conference outings. Guests will get to sample and learn about craft beers in the Seattle neighborhood that kicked off the microbrewing renaissance forty years ago and enjoy a beer like the locals do.

We will Meet at a local Seattle Microbrewery

A trained Cicerone will lead the group on a guided tasting of 4 to 6 different beers. Each beer will be served in a 4-ounce taster. Your Beer Guide will go over the basics of enjoying a great beer, along with learning about each of the beers they are tasting. This will include:
  • How best to evaluate a beer including appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel and overall impression.
  • How to recognize the distinctive qualities of the major beer styles.
  • Understand some basic beer terminology such as hoppy, malty, ABV and IBU.
  • Understand the basic process of making beer including the major ingredients of barley, hops, yeast and water.
  • Understand the historical background of each style. There is a story in every glass and your guide will tell the story behind each beer style.

The beers available constantly change but the most likely styles of beers will be some combination of:

  • Lager
  • Pale Ale
  • IPA
  • Amber Ale
  • Wheat Beer
  • Saison or Sour
  • Porter or Stout

All the beers we will taste will have been brewed on site by the brewery.

Besides the beers each participant will receive a gift bag with:

  • Souvenir Tasting Glass
  • Beer and Food Pairing Guide
  • Beer tasting score sheet
  • Souvenir bottle opener
  • A tasting list with descriptions
  • A map of the neighborhood with other brewery locations

Available Breweries

Most of the breweries in Seattle are small, privately owned establishments that cater to the local neighborhood and families. Because of that only a few have space for larger groups. Most of the breweries are available for larger groups on most days of the week from the early afternoon to the early evening. A few of the breweries are available for groups on Saturday between noon and 2:00 p.m. None of the breweries are available for large groups after 2:00 p.m on Saturdays, although it is possible for smaller groups to visit any of the breweries on Saturday after 2:00 p.m.

Below are descriptions of the available breweries for group events and tours.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Obec Brewery

Obec Brewing
1144 NW 52nd Street
Seattle, WA 98107
(Google Map)
obecbrewing.com

Based in the heart of Ballard’s Brewing District, Obec Brewing is an integral part of the Craft Brewing Community. Obec (pronounced obez or obetz) is a Czech word for community. Owners Wayne and Stacey have long been involved with the Czech Republic, the Czech Community and Czech Beer. Known for its Czech inspired beers such as a pilsner, a Czech Dark, and granat they also feature a line of excellent IPAs, porters, English Ales and Belgian beers. On the side of the brewery you will see a large mural by artist and former Obec taproom server Jorand Atkinson. Presented in the style of the Czech Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, the mural ties in the themes of brewing, community, Bohemia and the Pacific Northwest.

Large groups will be seated in the large, covered patio where they will sample a variety of amazing Seattle Craft beers. After the presentation your guide will be able to take smaller groups back to the brewery where they will learn the basic process of brewing beer. On the same block Obec’s neighbors include Stoup Brewing and Urban Family Brewing. Within three blocks you can visit Reuben’s Brews, Lucky Envelope Brewing and Wheeliepop Brewing.

The times available for large group tours and beer tastings are between these hours.

Stoup is a word for a drinking vessel from Northern England and Scotland, and was founded by a chemist, a biology teacher and a gastronome. This is one of the fastest growing breweries in the Ballard Brewing District. Their award-winning Mosaic Pale Ale, NW Red, Robust Porter and Citra IPA are almost always available, with another 10 to 15 seasonal brews constantly being rotated through the taproom.

A large upstairs taproom can accommodate up to 40 people for a sit-down beer tasting. Large windows facing the west open to a balcony overlooking their Beer Garden. Please note that there is no elevator to this space and is not appropriate for mobility challenged guests. Urban Family Brewing is just across the street and Obec Brewing is just down the street. Within three blocks you can visit Reuben’s Brews, Lucky Envelope Brewing and Wheeliepop Brewing.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Lagunitas Taproom and Beer Sanctuary

Lagunitas Taproom and Beer Sanctuary
1550 NW 49th St.
Seattle, WA 98107
(Google Map)
lagunitas.com/taprooms/seattle

In 2016 California’s pioneering brewery opened a brewery and taproom in the Ballard Brewery District. Founded in Petaluma, California in 1993 they realized they needed to earn their chops if they wanted to survive in Seattle. All the beers we will sample were brewed right on site and they have definitely earned the right to be part of the local craft brewing community. It is possible to get a few of the Lagunitas flagship beers, but the local beers feature hoppy IPAs, light lagers, porters, stouts, sours and amazing barrel aged beers.

In the 1920s the Beer Sanctuary was a car showroom and features a large, wide open floor plan, including a stage for musical performances. There is plenty of seating for groups up to 40 people inside the taproom. On nice days a large, outdoor patio can be used. After the presentation your guide will be able to take smaller groups back to the brewery where they will learn the basic process of brewing beer. The Beer Sanctuary is about 4 to 5 blocks from the bulk of the breweries in the Ballard Brewing District, including Urban Family Brewing, Reuben’s Brews, Obec Brewing, Stoup Brewing, Lucky Envelope Brewing, and Wheeliepop Brewing. There is a brewery across the street but is currently being remodeled and more information is expected soon. Lagunitas is also about 4 to 5 blocks from the heart of Ballard’s Dining District where your guests can find over 20 restaurants, pubs and cocktail lounges.

The times available for large group tours and beer tastings are between these hours. Note that times live music are regularly scheduled have been excluded from this schedule.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Jellyfish Brewing Company in Georgetown

Jellyfish Brewing Company
917 South Nebraska Street
Seattle, WA 98108
(Google Map)
jellyfishbrewing.com

Historic Georgetown, about 4 miles south of Downtown Seattle, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Seattle and the center of a vibrant arts, dining and brewery scene. Georgetown has retained its gritty, 19th century industrial roots when it was the sixth largest brewing district in the world. The massive brick remains of the old Seattle Brewery still dominate the town’s center. Now hipsters, artisans and beer lovers congregate in the neighborhood’s galleries, restaurants, saloons and breweries. Jellyfish Brewing Company occupies an old warehouse about a block off the main drag.

Jellyfish founders and co-owners, Mark and Tom, trace their brewing lineage back to the University District’s Big Time Brewery and Alehouse, one of Seattle’s first craft breweries, established in 1988. Next to the taproom is their brewery where we can effortlessly sit up to 40 people. It may be possible to accommodate larger groups. On nice days a large, outdoor patio space can be used. A wide range of unique and interesting beers will make it simple to easily taste and discuss 4 or 6 different beers. Because the presentation will be in the brewery section it will get a close up look at the brewing process and a tour of the barrel aging room.

Airport Way South, Georgetown’s main street, is only a block away from Jellyfish Brewing. Besides at least a dozen restaurants, saloons, coffee shops, and taverns, there are a couple of wine tasting venues as well as Lowercase Brewing, Machine House Brewery and the Elysian Taproom. After the tour guests would be welcome to stay and try more beers at Jellyfish or to explore Georgetown.

The times available for large group tours and beer tastings are between these hours.
